At Angel Hearts Health Care Services LLC, we’ve had the opportunity to assist patients with a variety of conditions at our Group Home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. This includes patients with varying levels of vision loss and impairments.

If you’re currently caring for a loved one with vision loss or if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to assist a blind person, these tips will help you serve them better.

Dos of Assistance

  • DO introduce yourself and ask the person if he needs assistance.
  • DO assist if it is requested.
  • DO respect the wishes of the person who is blind.
  • DO treat Blind people as individuals. They each have their strengths and weaknesses, just like everyone else.

Don’ts of Assistance

  • DON’T shout when you speak. They can’t see but often have a fine hearing.
  • DON’T be afraid to use words like “blind” or “see.”
  • DON’T insist upon trying to help if your offer of assistance is declined.
  • DON’T grab the person you are guiding by the hand, arm, or shoulder and try to steer him.

These are just some of the things you can do to make life easier for your loved one.
